You removed the plug, so yes, in that case it's normal for the fluid to fall out. (you don't have a front axle instead it's called a cv joint.) if you're not too mechanically inclined i wouldn't suggest replacing it on your own. Depending on the size of the leak, it may be okay to drive with a leaking axle seal, but not for very long.
